Working towards my dream

Taekwondo

Posted by C Moon on December 5, 2007

Taekwondo is a martial art (do), promoting strict self-discipline and character building through strenuous but controlled movements of fists (kwon) and feet (tae). My maternal grand-grand-father was a ninth dan black-belt holder in Judo. The ninth dan was the highest rank in martial arts at his time. Probably I got a gene from him and since my early childhood I kept asking my dad to enroll me at training centers for several martial arts (including Taekwondo, Kung-fu (Wushu), Jeetkun-do, Judo, and Capoeira). My dad is a “static” man, working several hours without pause on the desk, and he vainly wished my determination to get weak with time.

He finally allowed me to select just one and in March 1999 I started my Taekwondo practice as a beginner wearing the white belt. Since then, Taekwondo practice became my daily routine and I spend one hour and thirty minutes everyday from Monday to Friday. Most recently, in March 2007, I was tested for promotion to the fourth dan black-belt (the level of an instructor or master) and succeeded.

Still I am very much interested in other martial arts that I was not able to practice. On my bookshelf, I have a collection of books on Taekwondo, Kung-fu, Jeetkun-do, Judo, and Capoeira, which I bought with my allowance in my grade school years. These books remind me of my early childhood dreams to be a general, even though a general no longer appears on the list of my career goals.
